What is the answer to the overwhelming crises of our nation? The violence in Dallas and Orlando for which we demand solutions from our “savior,” the government, but this “savior” is dominated by leaders who exempt themselves from the very laws they impose? Apathy has ridden us to the point we believe that anything we do won’t matter anyway–so we do nothing. Said plainly: “Everybody feels the evil, but no one has courage or energy enough to seek the cure” (Alexis de Tocqueville, Democracy in America.)

What did Tocqueville observe about America’s greatness?

“I sought for the greatness and genius of America in her commodious harbors and her ample rivers – and it was not there . . . in her fertile fields and boundless forests and it was not there . . . in her rich mines and her vast world commerce – and it was not there . . . in her democratic Congress and her matchless Constitution – and it was not there. Not until I went into the churches of America and heard her pulpits aflame with righteousness did I understand the secret of her genius and power. America is great because she is good, and if America ever ceases to be good, she will cease to be great.” (Democracy in America)

Tocqueville warned that modern democracy may be adept at inventing new forms of tyranny, because radical equality could lead to the materialism of an expanding bourgeoisie and to the selfishness of individualism. He warned that In such conditions we “lose interest in the future of our descendants…and meekly allow ourselves to be led in ignorance by a despotic force all the more powerful because it does not resemble one.” Sounds like our country today. We CAN change it because WE can change our heart and develop what Tocqueville termed the “habits of the heart” which were possessed by our forefathers when they laid the cornerstone of our great nation.

If we turn to Him, God promises: “I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit..I will remove the heart of stone from you..I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes…you shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers, and you shall be my people, and I will be your God…I will deliver you…” (Ezekial 36:26-29)
