Sometimes I find it so hard not to be anxious about the future—our nation’s future, my children’s future and my personal future. We are surrounded by pressure to become anxious! One of God’s best cures for my own anxiety is demonstrating how God takes away my anxiety. That may sound silly, however battling anxiety (or fear or worry) requires learning good habits and if we are ignorant of the fundamentals then anxiety will constantly cripple us. Teaching others reminds us of the fundamentals and keeps us on our game! When I began coaching volleyball, it improved my game because coaching forced me to think through and apply the fundamentals so I could demonstrate them. There are fundamentals which I remind myself of because the threat of anxiety constantly seeks to raise it’s ugly head and gnaw away at my peace—sometimes even multiple times during one day! So what are the fundamentals which alleviate anxiety? Most importantly—knowing God—because when we KNOW Him, we KNOW He is bigger than whatever makes us anxious. Second—ASKING God for help as soon as we spot the anxiety. Our wisdom pales next to HIS! Third—DOING what He says no matter how crazy or contrary to our own wisdom it seems. There was a time in my life when I would have ignored these fundamentals and written them off as foolishness. That’s before I has experienced God. I was too proud in my own wisdom to humble myself and thus, remained ignorant of God. I needed to become like a child in my relationship with God in order to know Him and thus, KNOW He cares and can handle anything! Jesus taught us to come to God like children—full of wonder and trust. When we are like children in our relationship with God, we are humbly aware of our need for Him and then it becomes our habit to trust Him! “Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.” (1 Pet. 5:6-7) There is no soul who cares for us like God does. He cares for our cares. When we experience Him, we KNOW He cares and we habitually entrust all of our cares to Him!
