God’s love is the most powerful force used to work change in a heart. Typically, folks make an appointment with me because they find themselves in a scary legal mess. I tell them that the easy part is solving their legal problem; the harder part is changing their heart. This is not me passing judgment upon them—for, I speak from the experience of struggling to change my own “desperately wicked” heart. Even after Christ redeems us and makes us spiritually alive, we still wrestle with the fleshly desires and insecurities which are embedded deep within our personalities and habits and addictions which have formed the “comfort zone” of our existence. Paul the Apostle said it well: “For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing.”(Rom. 7:18-19) We desperately need someone stronger than ourselves to help us change! Do we know anyone stronger than God? Do we know any force more powerful than His love which conquered death? Most of us don’t turn to God until we are desperate. However, the mark of a changed heart is–after we have experienced his indescribable goodness in desperate times–that we are so profoundly moved that we don’t want to go back to how we were before He changed us! When God’s love changes us, He draws us back for more—again and again! Soon, we find that we no longer find “joy” in anything less than Him. We find that the earthly pleasures are hollow, empty and unfulfilling unless they are obtained in the peace of His will. He changes our desires and habits. Undoing a lifetime of bad habits and addictions is a process. For change to endure, it must begin in the heart. Fear of punishment may divert disaster and immediate consequences—but it won’t change our heart like God’s love. Love transforms our heart and casts out fear. God is The Heart-Changer!
