Love without expectation; because Christ, Who didn’t need anything—gave us everything. Christ didn’t come to earth for the primary purpose of having a good time. He had a completely selfless mission and when we become God’s children, He bestows upon us the same honorable commission. If we choose to live below our royal commission, I’m not sure who we are hurting worse—ourselves—or others. My perspective used to be that serving Christ was a boring drag and that it definitely did not fit in with my idea of “having a good time.” That’s because I’d never experienced the joy of selflessness. The Bible says that love “seeketh not her own.” (1 Cor. 13:5) Until we learn to love without ANY expectation, we never really experience the purest love which God has stored up for us. It is HIS love and there is nothing like it. His love is readily distinguishable from the selfish and commonplace “love” of man. Jesus said: “For if ye love them which love you, what thank have ye? for sinners also love those that love them. And if ye do good to them which do good to you, what thank have ye? for sinners also do even the same. And if ye lend to them of whom ye hope to receive, what thank have ye? for sinners also lend to sinners, to receive as much again. (Luke 6:32-34) Instead, He encouraged us to rise to the challenge of love. He encouraged us to reach beyond the stars of love and do the unthinkable. God’s love defies our human understanding because every minute of the day He is loving those who are unthankful and evil. Jesus challenged us: “But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil.” (Luke 6:35) We don’t have to understand it in order to do it, but when we do it, we want to do it again. When we begin to love others without any expectation of receiving love, then our heart is enlightened and we are able to recognize and experience God’s perfect love. It is how He loves and He gives the best!
