Sometimes I allow myself to get caught in what I call a “monkey-mind trap” and to be free I need to let go of what I’ve clenched in the fist of my mind. In countries like India, monkeys are captured by anchoring a bottle to the ground and placing a banana inside. A monkey will reach inside to pull the banana out, but the narrow neck of the bottle will prevent the banana from being removed. Most monkeys will trade their freedom for a banana. Although I don’t believe I descended from monkeys, sometimes I act like one! I allow my mind to clench onto a desire so tightly that I am robbed of my God-given freedom! Many times it is not the fact that my desire is wrong, it is simply that I’m not allowing God to provide for it; I want the banana in the bottle—not the one on the tree! Then, when the fist of my mind becomes so tightly wrapped around what I desire, I become blinded and can no longer see God’s blessings all around me. In my obsession, I have forgotten about all the banana’s hanging from the trees around me. I have forsaken my freedom in order to hold onto my desire. The TRUTH is the key to releasing me from any desire which entraps me. God is the Author of truth and freedom. Jesus said: “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (Jn ‭8:31-32‬) The more I know Him, the more I know truth. The more I know truth, the more I can SEE His blessings and the easier it is to unclench the fist of my mind and release whatever has entrapped me. The mind is so powerful that it can paralyze us, delude us, and prevent us from experiencing the extraordinary blessings God has planned for us. No matter what our desire is—money, family, relationships, security—none of it will EVER satisfy us without God. This is truth and–we must train our minds in truth in order to experience the blessings which God secured when He purchased our freedom. To be free means to desire the Author of Freedom above anything or anyone else. When we let go of the desires clenched in the fist of our mind, we find the incredible blessings of freedom!
