As children of God, it’s absolutely insane that we would allow ourselves to be seduced back into the slavery of sin. Throughout the course of my Christian life, the reason I went back to enslavement—over and over again—was because I never learned to live in the freedom of Christ. I never pursued Christ with complete abandon because to do so meant I had to give up the things of the world which I loved. I loved myself, my family, my possessions, my goals, my dreams, etc.—more than I loved Christ. I didn’t realize that those were the very things which were enslaving me. I had to experience the things which enslaved me to the nth degree to realize they were my shackles. In doing so, I nearly destroyed myself and–I hurt a lot of other people along the way. My pursuit of wealth, respect, friendship, love, possessions, etc., was a delusional seduction which produced perpetual dissatisfaction. As I was drowning in the dissatisfaction of my own way, God graciously gave me a gift and enlightened me to recognize that the gift wasn’t “chance” or “fate”—it was HIM. His unexpected goodness touched my heart and took my breath away. It was like that first drink of cool water after a long desert hike. I thirsted for more and was determined to pursue Him at any cost. That’s when I began to experience real freedom! Then, as I’ve experienced the freedom in living in Christ, I’ve also become more vigilant to guard against the seduction of the world’s enslavement because experiencing REAL freedom motivates me to REMAIN free. When we are born again, we receive a priceless gift—the ability to CHOOSE freedom. Jesus has given us liberty and sight so we no longer have to live in slavery and blindness. Jesus said: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed.” (Lk. 4:18) Christ has set us free; thus, we can choose to live each day in freedom! Our surrendered will is the key to His freedom!
