Learning to talk with God can be a little like learning a different language. If we wish to have fluent communication with God, we must be willing to put the time into learning His language and we MUST practice it. We learn His language basics by attending church, reading His Word, reading supplemental resources which explain His Word, talking to other Christians, etc. These activities are like learning vocabulary, sentence structure, noun/verb agreement and the basics about another language. We can read it and write it but to connect with another person who speaks it, we must learn to converse fluently in it—and, it’s even better if we learn to THINK in it! I spent the majority of my Christian life learning God’s language basics, but it wasn’t until a few years ago, when His love drew me to pursue KNOWING Him, that I began to develop a friendship with Him. I knew a lot ABOUT God, but I didn’t KNOW God—I knew of Him as a King, a Judge, a Creator, etc., but I didn’t KNOW and CONVERSE with Him as I would a loving Father. When we learn to talk with God, then His Word begins to make sense at a level beyond simple human intellectual comprehension because His Spirit speaks HIS wisdom to our heart. The wisdom we gain from communicating with God is not arrogant head-knowledge, it is humble heart-knowledge. “But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.” (James‬ ‭3:17‬) Yesterday, as I continued to “practice” talking with God, I was amazed at how His Spirit filled my mind with answers and flooded my heart with peace. GOD’S answer to my prayers didn’t reflect my fallible nature; but rather God’s perfect nature which is wise, loving and righteous. By learning to converse with God, I am learning wisdom I could never have comprehended without Him. God’s wisdom is foolishness to us if we don’t know Him. We know Him much better when we learn to talk with Him. A relationship with God is one we’ll never regret!
