If we search for love from anyone except God, we will never find the greatest love God intends for us to possess. Nowhere in His Word does He EVER say for us to search to be loved by others, yet the culture of the world bombards us with the idea that we should strive to make ourselves desirable so we can capture the ultimate lover. And sadly– most of us live like we BELIEVE the world–instead of God. We REALLY believe that–the better looking we are, the more intelligent we are, the richer we are, the more athletic we are, the more successful we are—then–the MORE we will be loved! We fail to understand the basic nature of love. True “Love”– “seeketh not her own.” (1 Cor. 13:5) If someone “loves” us because we are beautiful, then the “love” will end when the beauty fades. Furthermore, they are not “loving” us; they are using us for their own pleasure. If someone “loves” us because we are rich they are “loving” us based upon the things they can possess and possessions produce perpetual dissatisfaction—not love. Their “love” is NOT about us—it is about them. “Love” is unselfishness and Christ was the ultimate example of unselfishness. He defined love: “This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.” (1 John 3:16) Thus–GOD doesn’t encourage us to seek love from another person because it would be a great betrayal to encourage us to seek to be loved from a source which He knows will use us and fail us. Rather, He tells us to “love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.” (Luke 10:27) It is from God Himself that we receive the most sacrificial form of love. We know no one—nor will we EVER know anyone–who loves us like He does. When we pursue God with ALL of our heart, soul, strength and mind, He fills us with indescribable and unending love which overflows to others. God IS love!
