When we are friends with God–we realize that we’d rather walk alone–WITH Him–than walk with the crowd–WITHOUT Him. When we are enriched by the Presence of God, the experience eclipses any form of human companionship. Furthermore, He enriches our ability to BE a better friend to others. It is humbling to think that Almighty God desires and “calls” us into the fellowship of His friendship. “God is faithful, who has called you into fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.” (1 Cor. 1:9) When we begin to SEEK His friendship, we begin to understand the immense richness of His grace. One of my favorite verses in the Bible about the richness of Christ’s love is: “For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich.” (2 Cor. 8:9) Ah, how indescribably beautiful is His love—for we know no one richer than Christ—The Lord of Heaven and Earth—who chose such great and abject impoverishment—so that we may possess His eternal richness! He enriches our life inside and then His richness spreads to the outside. Paul identified the rich testimony of Christians who have “Christ among you” and wrote: “For in him you have been enriched in every way—with all kinds of speech and with all knowledge— God thus confirming our testimony about Christ among you.” (1 Cor. 1:5-6) Having Christ doesn’t mean we do not desire human companionship—it means that rather than NEEDING friends we a ARE a friend. There is a huge difference. He fills us so much that we are not needy; rather we are FILLED by His Presence. It is the peace of His Presence which we may then offer to others by our friendship with them. There is no better gift that we can give to another person than to draw them into the peace of God’s Presence. No one will be drawn to God by us unless they see HIM IN US. When He enriches us by His Presence, He is as evident in us as a ray of sunlight piercing a sky full of dark storm clouds. Walking with God is a choice to be part of a single ray of sunshine instead of blending in with a cluster of dark clouds!
