God is our greatest source of hope, because hope in Him is not a wish-it is an expectation based upon His unfailing character. Hope in God isn’t an expression of uncertainty, it is an expression of certainty based upon God’s attributes. It is not hoping that a desired result will come to pass, but rather, it is knowing that certain constants exist because of Who God IS. When we know God, we experience His character and He is the reason for our hope. If I have chosen to be a farmer–I plant a field because I have hope that it will rain and the weather will cooperate during harvest—and, I am placing all my hope in future events which are not 100% certain. However, if I am a farmer because that is the profession in which God has called me, and I plant a field–I don’t place my hope in the weather—but rather, in the infallible character of God. God promises us—eternal salvation, unfailing love, peace, joy, strength, etc.—and His Word is good. We don’t have to worry that He will stop being Who He IS and doing what He does—therefore, He is our most unfailing hope. We do NOT know if the weather will cooperate—but we DO know that He will always love us and hope in Him will NEVER disappoint us. “And hope does not put us to shame, because Godʼs love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.” (Rom. 5:5) Unfortunately, when we hope in things which are less than God, it disquiets our soul. The Psalmist wrote:“Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance.” (Psa. 42:5) When we hope in GOD, we do not worry because we have no doubts about God’s ability to care for us. We have hope in the people who love us because we know their character and we believe they will not disappoint us. Therefore, how much MORE we should place our hope in the infallible character, unparalleled power, infinite wisdom and everlasting love–of God!
