Sometimes God frees us from our position of security so that we can discover the potential He has created within us. The process of freeing us is often very painful but is is almost always completely necessary– because we won’t let go on our own. We are many times the like the eaglet who must be booted out of the nest in order to learn how to fly. There’s NO doubt that we never regret learning to fly. When I was in college I worked as a secretary and–I was really bad at it–so I was fired. At the time, I was crushed—but now—I realize that if I hadn’t been fired, I may have never become an attorney. I was enjoying the financial security and probably would’t have left on my own. God knew my talents lay elsewhere but I couldn’t see it. I was kicked out of the nest then, and I’ve even been kicked out of the nest many more times since then! In fact, God is in the process of kicking me out of another nest I’ve made—and oh, how scary it’s been!!! However, when I’ve turned my heart to Him, He’s always been faithful to prove to me that He will do greater things with my life than I could’ve EVER done on my own. When we get too secure in material things, we get complacent and we don’t become all the wonderful things God intends for us to become or accomplish the miracles He’s planned. He does us a huge favor by allowing us to lose what makes us secure. In the painful process, we build spiritual muscle and better habits. He develops talent which lies dormant in the security of our own way. God’s ways are not our ways—they are much better! God said: “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” (Isaiah 55:9) When we seek God, He promises to show us HIS way. “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.”(James 1:5) God has a MARVELOUS plan—I just need to be in on it and choose HIS way instead of MINE!
