When God tell us to go in a radically different direction, our faith (or lack thereof) will be quickly revealed. Hebrews recounts a few examples of folks who were inducted into God’s “Hall of Faith.” They came from all walks of life. In fact some, like Moses, were born into slavery! At age 75, God told Abraham to leave his father’s family and take his family and begin traveling to a destination unknown. We must place ourselves in Abraham’s shoes to understand the magnitude of his faith in God. Can you imagine the conversation he had with his wife and father—or anyone who asked him about what he was doing and where he was going? But—Abraham KNEW God and he KNEW that God was trustworthy. God promised Him: “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.” (Genesis 12:1-3) God said “Go” and–he went. “So Abram went, as the Lord had told him, and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran.” (Gen. 12:4) Abraham’s faith was so great that he didn’t have to SEE the promise of God come to fruition during his lifetime in order to remain faithful. Like so many of the greatest works God does through us, they become greater after we’ve gone on to heaven. More people have known and benefitted from the faith of Abraham AFTER his death than ever did while he was alive. When we KNOW God, we don’t have to SEE the end result of our faith in order to LIVE IT–because we trust Him. When God told Abraham to pack up and move to address unknown; he had no idea of the historical and spiritual significance his obedience would have for generations to come. If Abraham’s faith had faltered, he would have missed out on God’s tremendous blessings. When God calls us to act by faith, we need to do it immediately—not intellectualize all the reasons that it seems crazy. We should never talk ourselves out of living by faith! God has a better plan than we do!
