From Volume 2 of Essential Faith: When I was young, I wanted the love of a Christian man—uhmmmm….who was also–handsome, rich, kind and loving. Right??!!? However, instead of seeking to build my own Christian character to attract that kind of man, I focused only on improving my physical status. If there is something I regret most about my youth, it is my failure to focus on developing my talents and character for the glory of God. Instead, I chose the short-sighted and foolish route of pleasure because I thought it held the key to my happiness. I thought if I could be pretty, popular, athletic and have the right material possessions, that I could attract the right man. Boy, oh boy how I worked to get these things! In high school, I got up at 0400, to work in a bakery before the school day started. In college, I almost always worked a minimum of two to three jobs and carried a full load of classes. I was determined to not just pay my bills—but to have as many of the nice things that the popular kids did so that I could be loved and accepted. In my small amount of free time, I dated and partied. I went to church sporadically—mostly to try to make my parents happy—however, I was not interested in developing myself for the glory of God. My life and my time was ALL about the things that fade away! I failed to make God real in my life and thus, missed living in reality! The reality is that all of those friends I attracted by improving my looks, possessions and status, were searching for the same love I was—the perfect love that isn’t found in anyone except God. Once I began to surrender to Him, I found His perfect love and plan for my life. Then, He began to develop the talents which He had given me which had been dormant for years! I’m learning that God creates unsurpassed beauty in ANYONE who possesses the joy of one surrendered to Him! As we surrender, He adds to us things that are better than what we used to desperately seek! “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” (Matt. 6:33) God’s love makes us valuable and His wisdom teaches us how to use of the talents He has given us. He has made me wiser and more talented than I could have ever been on my own! I don’t ever want to stray from The Magnificent Creator Who is my Counselor, Guide and Best Friend. Indeed, I am the best friend, when I lead others to my Best Friend because I want them to discover His amazing love, the talents He has given them and to live in the wisdom of the adventure He has planned!
