From Essential Faith volume 2: I sometimes find it difficult to put the experience of God’s love into words. Just as there is a vast difference between describing how it feels to fall in love and actual experience of falling in love; there is no description which truly does justice to the experience of God’s love. I may wish to persuade people of God’s goodness and convince them to love Him so they will know His perfect love; however, just as I cannot force someone to fall in love with me, I also cannot force anyone to fall in love with God. Ultimately, no amount of persuasion can change a heart that does not wish to love or be loved by God. He gives each individual a free will and a choice to love Him and thus, to choose the source of life and all that is good! He tells us: “I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Therefore choose life, that you and your offspring may live, loving the Lord your God, obeying his voice and holding fast to him, for he is your life and length of days.” (Deut. 30:19-20) Absent the powerful presence and love of God, life will never be fully experienced. I have never before experienced love like His! He loved me long before I acknowledged His love—I was just too blind to see it. I chose to pursue the acceptance and love of man instead of the love of God. I traded the very essence of who God made me in exchange for that which would never bring me joy. The things that I loved, did not love me back and, instead of seeking to love people, I sought for them to love me. We are created in His image, to love Him above all else—and thus, find our completeness in Him. He designed us to love Him but He does not demand our love because if He did then—it would no longer be love. When we seek God, He opens our eyes and heart to His love. When we experience it, we begin to recognize it in so many ways that we didn’t before! His love is felt in the ray of sunshine touching our face and drying our tears as if the warm hands of God are reaching out and touching us when we’ve had a tough day. His love is seen by others when the peace which floods our heart overflows and out pours into the lives of others. God’s love is wondrously multi-dimensional! God’s love is our choice! When we talk with Him, walk with Him and seek to be in the center of His will, our heart is opened to experience His perfect love!
