From Essential Faith volume 2: God is always our friend. I recall talking to man who lost his wife of 58 years, and as he talked about their wonderful life together, tears poured down his face. He told me about all the things that were missing in his life now that she was gone. His loss was so acute that I knew it would be a long, long time before he would heal. My heart hurt for him. It made me think about the friendships which are most precious to me. Over the last few years, as I’ve found friendship with God; it’s been so wonderful that I realize that I never, ever want to lose my precious friendship with Him. He is my steadfast and perfect Friend. He never lies to me; He is never a “no show;” He doesn’t play mind games; He doesn’t put me off; He doesn’t play hard to get; He isn’t moody; He doesn’t talk ugly; etc. He is the perfect Friend! I rely upon Him so much! He listens to my silliest complaints; He allows me to freely speak my mind because He knows my heart; I don’t have to hide my deepest desires from Him because He loves this crazy woman He created; I can confess my greatest and most shameful weaknesses and sins to Him without diminishing His love; and I can cry for help without saying a word. With God as my Friend, my toughest trials in life are made small and insignificant. He IS real, He IS faithful and He is the most steadfast love of my life! “How precious is your steadfast love, O God! The children of mankind take refuge in the shadow of your wings. They feast on the abundance of your house, and you give them drink from the river of your delights. For with you is the fountain of life; in your light do we see light. Oh, continue your steadfast love to those who know you, and your righteousness to the upright of heart! Let not the foot of arrogance come upon me, nor the hand of the wicked drive me away.” (‭Psalm‬ ‭36‬:‭7-11‬) Once we learn to walk close to God, it is hard to imagine living without Him. The good news is that we don’t have to! He will never grow old, die or leave–He is our forever Friend!
