Giving is the key to God’s blessings. Giving includes much more than money; it includes our most valuable resource–our time! Giving involves a certain degree of risk and sacrifice; however, when we are following God’s will–then we NEVER lose. God wants us to be wise about how we give; however, when we’re listening to Him then we ARE being wise. Some of us find it easy to sacrifice for our own family, however we risk losing blessings if we stop there. Jesus also calls us to a give to the stranger, the prisoner, the sick and the hungry! He said: “As you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.” (Matt. 25:40) Giving applies equally to our money and our time. Money is actually easier to give than time because we can always earn more money. We have no legitimate excuse for not giving because we ALL have talent and time. Our talents are as varied as we are–cooking, teaching, listening, sports, carpentry, etc.;–AND we ALL have the same number of hours in a day! We EACH have EQUAL opportunities to give of our time and talent. So–what are we doing with the time, talent and resources God has given us? Giving up our time is not a sacrifice–it is an investment because we’re receiving the blessings of God. Jesus said that key to being blessed is to give: “Give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.” (Luke 6:38) Furthermore, we cannot close our ears and eyes to the needs of others and expect for God to hear our prayers and meet our needs. The Bible says: “Whoever closes his ear to the cry of the poor will himself call out and not be answered.” (Prov. 21:13) The best blessings in life are not the temporal, material things which we obtain through our own works, but the blessings we give to others of our time, resources and talents. These are GOD’S blessings and they last beyond our lifetime!
