Are we “living” like we’re dead or–like we’re alive? When our spirit has been born again it is incorruptible (1 Peter 1:3-4) but our sinful flesh is determined to corrupt us and destroy the wonderful life God has planned for us. Paul described this war in himself: “I see in my members another law waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members. Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?” (Romans 7:23-24) We have a choice to live after the flesh or after The Spirit. My experience living after the flesh was horrible. It was like I was engaged in a bloody battle against evil with no armor, no weapons, no comrades, no cover and with both hands tied behind my back. All I could do was run scared, dodge bullets, and hope I blended in with the enemy enough to be invisible. I certainly wasn’t helping win the war! I chose to follow my fleshly desires because I thought if I followed God’s way I’d miss out on fun and the enjoyments of life. I failed to recognize that when I was born again that God changed me to desire a deeper joy which is different than temporal happiness! Ultimately, my pursuit of the flesh took me lower and lower…and, after I hit rock bottom, I was finally able to see the wretched person I’d become. That’s when I turned to God and cried out for help. I didn’t ask Him to change me into a “Spirit-filled Christian,” because I didn’t even know what that meant. I just asked Him for help because that’s all I knew to do. Ever since, God has been teaching me the benefits of following His Spirit instead of my flesh. The battle against evil isn’t less intense–I just have better weapons. God is my Protector and my hands are free of chains. He gives me His strength, wisdom and love. I have HIS peace in the battle. Sure, I still war with my flesh…but it’s different now because I remember the misery of living in the flesh and I’m relishing the peace of living in The Spirit. As the Bible says–the difference between living in The Spirit versus living in the flesh is like living as if you’re alive instead of dead: “For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.” (Romans 8:6) To live in The Spirit is to live like you’re alive!
