Some of the best and most pure joys in life are not the blessings we receive but the blessings we give! God’s Word says “it is more blessed to give than to receive.” (Acts 20:35) If we believe His Word, then our life will primarily be about giving because we KNOW that’s where we’ll receive the greatest joys–right? Think about the truth of these words of Jesus: “Give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.” (Luke 6:38) In that context, think about what is planned for today. What blessings do we SEEK today? Do we seek good grades, more money, relationships, approval of peers, fitness, health, weight loss, recognition, success, etc.? We think they will give us joy—and, they certainly DO add joy to our lives–but it’s not the same quality of joy which comes from GIVING! Most of us think about giving in the context of money–and say: “well I can barely pay my bills…so I can’t give.” However, EVERYONE can give a smile, a hug, an encouraging word, a helpful hand, a listening ear, a meal, an encouraging note, a prayer, etc. We can ALL be tuned in to God’s wisdom so we know when those around us are ready to hear the testimony of His work in our lives so they may see a living example of our risen Christ! We simply must train ourselves to listen to God so we may bless others instead of listening to ourselves to attain our own blessings. When we listen to God, we focus on others. The more we focus upon the needs of others, the less we need; and while we’re busy helping others, God is busy giving us MORE than we need! Our daily routine should include this question: “What do you want me to do today God?” God always has a better plan than we do. His plan is for us to experience the double blessing of giving; that is, the JOY of giving to others and the sweet SATISFACTION of God giving us the desires of our heart!
