When I ran track in college, our coach made us run the bleachers in the football stadium. We didn’t just run the bottom set, we ran all the way to the top set known as “Hog Heaven.” By the second of four sets, my lungs would be on fire, heart would be racing and hamstrings popping my knees up past my hips like they were being released by rubber bands. I always felt like there was no way I’d be able to finish two more sets! However, my coach knew I could. He was a world-class runner and had trained world-class runners. I knew I could trust him to bring out the best in me. Although I never became a world-class runner, I accomplished a speed and strength far beyond what I’d ever possessed before he was my coach. He pushed me to accomplish what I didn’t know I could do. This is what God does for us. When we allow Him to guide us, He gives us success we never imagined and builds strength we never knew we had the potential to achieve. He knows our limitations and He knows our potential. GOD knows we need His strength–the key is for US to know how much we need HIM. When times are tough and the trouble of life screams through our lungs and beats through our heart so that we don’t think we can run another step–we must remind ourselves that God is our STRENGTH. The Bible says: “Though the fig tree should not blossom, nor fruit be on the vines, the produce of the olive fail and the fields yield no food, the flock be cut off from the fold and there be no herd in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the Lord; I will take joy in the God of my salvation. God, the Lord, is my strength; he makes my feet like the deer’s; he makes me tread on my high places.” (Habakkuk 3:17-19) As a result of my coach’s wisdom, running the bleachers produced strength in me that I’d never seen in myself. That strength didn’t disappear when I lost a race–it motivated me train harder with him. My Almighty Coach knows my limits because–He created me. I can trust that the challenges of the journey are not beyond HIS strength and wisdom. God is my coach and I don’t need to worry about the challenges or failures—I just need to trust Him and allow HIM to build HIS strength in me! When we see the results of God’s strength and wisdom working through us, then failures and obstacles serve only to strengthen our resolve to train harder with our Coach! He ALWAYS wins!
