What is our basis for measuring our life’s greatest goals? In Steven Cubby’s book “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People,” he suggests writing a personal mission statement based upon the eulogy others would write about us at our funeral. What do we hope that the people in the primary four roles in our life–our intimate family members, best friends, closest professional associates and closest community members–would say about us at our funeral? Interesting. Would my children say: “She was a loving mom who gave us a good home?” Would my colleagues say: “She was a real killer in the courtroom? Would my close friends say: “She would do anything for me?” Would my close community friends say: “She was generous with her money?” Is any of that enough of a legacy and worthy of the sum purpose of the life God has given me? It’s not that there is anything wrong with any of these goals per se; the problem is that they are about me–and I was created to accomplish something greater than glorifying myself. The highest and most perfect goal we can have for our life is that it be lived for the purpose which GOD created us—to bring glory to Him. The Bible says: “I will say to the north, Give up, and to the south, Do not withhold; bring my sons from afar and my daughters from the end of the earth, everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made.” (Isaiah 43:6-7) When our life’s mission is to reflect the Glory of God, then our legacy WILL be defined by HIM and His glory will permeate every aspect of our life and become the foundation of our life goals. God will be the common theme of what others remember about us when we’re gone. Our legacy will stretch beyond US because it will be inextricably intertwined in our Everlasting Father. When we seek to know God and His will, our life naturally becomes a legacy of Him. We must challenge ourselves to begin writing a new legacy which finds it’s foundation in a close relationship with our Heavenly Father. Our life’s legacy will be much more than the sum of our own existence when our existence is lived for a purpose beyond ourselves. Today, let’s seize the opportunity to glorify The Almighty Father Who created us in HIS image!
