What kind of blessings do we desire? Some blessings have spiritual significance and are clearly miraculous gifts from God because they continue to give joy long after the initial blessing. For example, every time I see a picture or video of my nephew, Patrick—I am blessed all over again. It doesn’t matter how much time passes, the blessing of being a part of his adoption puts the same wonderful joy in my heart that it did on the day of his adoption. Watching the love and joy in my sister in law and brother makes my heart joyful. Seeing the smile for miles light up the face of Patrick’s grandmother, Laah, nearly bursts my heart. Being a small part of Patrick’s adoption is one of those blessings which keeps on blessing! The Bible says that God has “spiritual” blessings for us: “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places.” (Eph. 1:3) The spiritual blessings are the best because they last forever! If we choose to live only satisfying our most fundamental needs—wealth, health, companionship, etc.,–we will miss out on the BEST blessings which God wants to give us! The physical blessings are wonderful, but even the blessings like love and joy are exponentially more lasting and fulfilling when their source is Christ. The Bible says: “Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.” (1 Corinthians 2:9) His blessings flow to us when we’re in love with Him. God planned to give little Patrick to Thomas and Arielle—and I almost missed the blessing of helping it come to pass because I was having a bad day when the phone call came in. I still remember it like it was yesterday and shudder to think about how different things could have been had God not touched my heart to return that call. There is NOTHING in this world which is worth exchanging for the blessings of God! Patrick Henry will always be a humbling reminder to me of how God allows even the most flawed of His children to be a part of His most enduring blessings. God’s unimaginable blessings await us today. We will discover them when we draw close to Him.
