The sweetest friendships are with those in whom we share our very soul. Such was the friendship between Jonathan and David. The Bible says: “Jonathan made a covenant with David, because he loved him as his own soul.” (1 Samuel 18:3) When God makes our soul and spirit alive through the new birth, He lives in us and we become capable of giving HIS love. My dearest “soul-friends” are those with whom I both share and enjoy–God’s love and wisdom. If our criteria for choosing friends is based upon their status, wealth or other external attractions—rather than their heart—then we are looking for less meaningful friendships. We’re likely looking for “connections” to boost our societal and economic standing rather than friends with whom we may share the deepest love, wisdom and strength of God. Our closest friends should be chosen by looking at the rich characteristics of God in their heart. We don’t need friends who are famous, world-powerful or wealthy to accomplish the amazing destiny God has for our lives. He wants us to be allied with people who think and love like He does. Perhaps Jonathan loved David as himself because he recognized the same quality that God told Samuel to look for when choosing a king for Israel. God said to Samuel: “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” (1 Samuel 16:7) God called David “a man after His own heart.” (Acts 13:22) If we choose our closest friends based upon their HEART instead of their looks, wealth, status, brains, etc.,—then the resulting friendship will be a source of great joy and blessing–not–betrayal and regret. True friends are an amazing blessing! The Bible says a friend always loves us, will makes us wiser, and sticks closer than a brother! (Prov. 17:17; 13:20; 18:24) We must look beyond the outward appearance, wealth and accomplishments in order to have “soul-friends” with whom we may share God’s deepest wisdom and perfect love!
