For most of my Christian life I’ve had a sadly warped picture of God and correcting it has taken years of passionately seeking to KNOW Him. He is not a terrifying force which waits and hopes to punish me–He’s a loving Father who paid the ultimate sacrifice to save me from my sin. His heart want’s to delight me with His presence and His Son’s death gives me that choice. God loves us because HE is extraordinary and knowing Him allows us to experience HIS extraordinary love. The Bible says: “So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.” (1 John 4:16) When Jesus submitted Himself to death, He opened up the door to a relationship with His Father. He doesn’t force Himself upon us. It is the call of grace–rather than the threat of hell–which draws us to Him. When get to know Him, we find there is no love like His; so, of course, we naturally fall in love with Him. God’s love is incomparable to human love. When we fall in love with a person it’s often because they possesses extraordinary characteristics which attract us—right? There is no one as extraordinary as God; thus HIS love for US is pure. We are ALL less extraordinary than Him. Kierkegaard wrote: “Is it an excellence in your love that it can love only the extraordinary, the rare? If it were love’s merit to love the extraordinary, then God would be—if I dare say so—perplexed, for to Him the extraordinary does not exist at all. The merit of being able to love only the extraordinary is therefore more like an accusation, not against the extraordinary nor against love, but against the love which can love only the extraordinary. Perfection in the object is not perfection in the love.” (Kierkegaard, Soren. Works of Love. 1847) When we “know and believe the love that God has for us,” then we realize that we are the imperfect objects of God’s unwavering love and we allow His love to attain perfection within us. (1 John 4:17) Oh, how indescribably beautiful is God’s love toward us! When we experience God’s love, it grows within us and completely transforms our heart! God is perfect love.
