When we are depressed, angry, hurt, anxious, disappointed, etc., and are missing the gift of God’s joy, we need to consider that WE may be the reason that we’ve lost our joy. God’s joy is unshakeable. His joy is “inexpressible and filled with glory.” (1 Peter 1:8) His joy is “our strength.” (Nehemiah 8:10) Jesus said that in Him “our joy will be full.” (John 16:24) God does not lie; thus, when we’re swept away by negative emotions, it’s because WE need to change something. We have separated ourselves from HIM. Sin does that. As Christians we often give ourselves a pass about sins like worry, anxiety, hurt feelings, depression, etc.; however, they ARE sins. Worry is doubting the character of God; hurt feelings are a sin when we fail to forgive and forget; depression removes our focus from thankfulness, etc. God is NEVER any of these things! As HIS children, we don’t have to be either. We often justify this behavior when we’re a victim of someone else’s sin. However, Christ conquered hell and made us victors–NOT victims. We transform ourselves from victims to victors when we get close to God. We get close to God by ridding ourselves of darkness so we can walk in HIS light. God’s Word says: “God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.” (1 John 1:5-6) To have the joy of God, we must confess our sins of worry, anxiety, unthankfulness, depression, unforgiveness, disappointment, etc., to HIM. He WILL free us from those dark clouds and teach us to walk in His glorious light. If these negative emotions are habits, then we must become vigilant to DAILY guard our minds and hearts against them. Ask Him for help. He is faithful. HE has secured our unshakeable joy–but to LIVE in it–we must stay close to HIM!
