The only people who can love us even remotely close to how God loves us–are those who are walking close to Him. If we search for unconditional love in those who aren’t close to God, we will be repeatedly disappointed. We fear that if people know about our past they won’t love us in the present; however, one who has God’s presence can love passed the past. That’s how God loves. He is the only One who knows our every flaw, and yet–perfectly love us. The Bible says: “He does not deal with us according to our sins, nor repay us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us. As a father shows compassion to his children, so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear him. For he knows our frame; he remembers that we are dust.” (Psalms 103:10-14) God knows every nook and cranny of my sinful past, and He has buried it “as far as east is from the west.” His love humbles me. I am as dust, and could never love someone like me like He does, thus, I shouldn’t have that expectation for someone else. When we allow God to completely satisfy our need for love, we adjust our expectations for each other. We are humbled because we realize we can’t give the unconditional love that we are expecting from others because only God can give it. We simply need to draw close to Him. When we are satisfied by God’s love, we have fewer expectations from others and thus, are less often disappointed by them. His love abundantly satisfies our heart!
