What lights up our day and fills us with the kind of joy that makes us walk like we’re floating on air or makes us feel like we’ll smile for years? Is it attention from one we love or admire? A pay raise? Our dream job? Attaining a personal fitness goal? Winning a game? God created us to live joyfully, but we often wrongly believe we’ll obtain permanent joy from temporary sources. He is our ONLY source of pure and permanent joy. Have we experienced HIS joy? If so, do we only choose to experience it sporadically? Of his personal experience of God’s joy, the Psalmist said: “You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” (Psalms 16:11) “Fullness of joy” means it’s always there and never runs out. God doesn’t change; His joy isn’t temporary. Temporal joys are more fully enjoyed when experienced in the context of His permanent joy. To have the steadfast joy of God, we must know Him in such a way that we’ve allowed Him to free us from the chains of our own desires. We desire Him above all else. We desire His presence when we awaken in the morning, when we plan our day, when we execute our plans, when we choose to relax, and when we lay our head down at night. God’s presence allows us to relish the present joy of Him rather than be constantly trapped in longing for future sources of temporary joy. He is the first and best love of our life. When I became a child of God, I didn’t get to KNOW Him right away; and so, for many years I had no concept about the joy of being in love with God. I missed out big time! Then, when I purposed to seek Him every morning, I began to fall in love with Him. I’m still falling in love. When we feed love, it grows. The more I fall in love with Him, the more I find the immense freedom of His permanent joy. “The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and he helps me. My heart leaps for joy, and with my song I praise him.” (Psalm 28:7)
