When we seek a relationship with God with the fresh expectation of a trusting child, we are the beneficiaries of the greatest friendship of our lifetime. In order to do this, we oftentimes must rid ourselves of years of baggage about who we believe God is. Human perception of God often paints Him as a wrathful judge, a benevolent, senile old man and–lots of unflattering images in between. If we view Him more as a judge instead of a loving Father, we’ll never desire to be close to Him. On the other hand, if we think His righteous nature can be sullied by our sin, we’ll never become one of His children because we won’t ever see our need for His gift of salvation. He took our judgment so we wouldn’t have to. He sacrificed everything because He desires us. He desires for us to be close to Him. He desires to live inside us and give us blessings that we can’t even imagine. For me, it took falling into an abyss of despair to discover the truth about His amazing goodness. It was the realization of His goodness which led me to turn from my own way and–that’s where I found Him. (Romans 2:4) His goodness captivated my heart and then, I desired to know the Giver of that goodness more than I desired to know anything. Everything else I’d tried had amounted to nothing. Now–He continually fills satisfies the deepest longings of my heart. I’ve experienced the truth about the magnificence which He created for me to live within Him. He’s made more of my life than I ever made of it on my own! His tender promise is my own personal experience: “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30) When we seek God with all of our heart, He exceeds the greatest expectations of our imagination!
