Do we comprehend God’s undying love for us? He gave us a remarkable example in the book of Hosea. Hosea married Gomer and they had a son. During the marriage she began sleeping with other men. She gave birth to two more children which were likely not Hosea’s. In spite of all this, Hosea continued to beg and plead for her to come back to his love. She finally left the home and moved in with a lover who promised her lavish things. He used her, dumped her and kicked her out of his house. She was sold into slavery. God told Hosea to go love Gomer like He loves: “And the Lord said to me, ‘Go again, love a woman who is loved by another man and is an adulteress, even as the Lord loves the children of Israel, though they turn to other gods.’” (‭Hosea‬ ‭3:1‬a) So Hosea went to the slave market, bought Gomer in her filthy, disreputable state and took her home. Can we imagine loving a continuously unfaithful spouse the way Hosea loved Gomer? Hosea had undoubtedly experienced God’s remarkable love. The book of Hosea is God’s plea for us to return to Him. When we leave God for the illusive enchantments and enticements of the world, He doesn’t keep us imprisoned in the safety of His love. Rather, He awaits our return. Some come back, and some–die enslaved to the world. I’ve been that slave. You see, I began my relationship with God with the hope and love of a newlywed. But I never sought a deep, personal relationship with God. So soon I began to turn to the gods of success, “love,” money, security, family, friends, beauty, sports, etc. But–when all my gods of pleasure had abandoned me and I was a helpless, miserable slave–God opened the door of my prison with a shining ray of His love. He held out His hand. I took it. He brought me into the home of His love. Even though He knew every detail of my unfaithfulness to Him–He still wanted me. I could hardly believe such undying love existed! Now–His love draws me to passionately desire Him. I–“Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever.” (Psalms‬ ‭136:1‬)
