Have we learned to live in the love which God intends for us to live? I’ve lived most of my Christian life like the religious leaders in the time of Christ. They were constantly trying to justify their religious, legalistic rules to avoid addressing the issues of their heart. For example, after Jesus astonished the crowds by silencing the Sadducees with His wisdom, the Pharisees got their lawyer to ask this question: “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” (Matthew 22:36) The Bible is clear that they weren’t asking this question because they really wanted to know the answer, but rather, simply to test Him. (vs. 35) Jesus astonishing response was: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” (vs. 37) Amazing! Jesus went right to the heart of the common problem which plagues all of mankind–our lack of love. God is love. We only need rules because we don’t love God. If we loved Him with all our our heart, soul and mind, we wouldn’t need rules to protect ourselves and others from our bad behavior because our love for God would be more important to us than our sin. When we love God with all that we are–it totally transforms us. That’s what true love does. Our relationship with Him becomes the driving force behind all that we do and say. Are we willing to seek His love without reservation? That’s what one does who is “in love”–we bare and surrender ourselves to the heart of another. Why are we so willing to entrust our heart to another mere human who struggles with the same uncertainty, fear and sin that we do, but refuse to surrender to our Loving Father? Are we afraid of God? If so, we need to search to know the truth about Him. If He is love—as His Word says He is–then we should run into His arms! There is no one more deserving of our trust than God who sacrificed His Son for us! When we seek to love Him with ALL our heart, soul and mind, He transform us from the inside; we are filled with the goodness of His Spirit; and our heart is surrounded by His love. There is no love that compares to HIS!
