Do you know anyone who is constantly unhappy and dissatisfied? Maybe it’s someone you’re trying to please, but nothing you do keeps them happy. Perhaps we are the unhappy person! When our life is dominated by unhappiness and dissatisfaction, we often blame our circumstances or others. We think if we could just have a–(fill in the blank)–then, we’d be happy! So, while we’re striving and scraping for our “happiness” to happen–we’re just enduring the present. However, the truth is that we’ll never be satisfied until we’re close to God. WE can’t satisfy anyone else and no one else can ever satisfy us. No sweetheart, spouse, baby, child, parent, friend, grandparent, grandchild, business associate, pop star, political big wig, millionaire–or ANY person or thing we believe will make our dreams come true–will EVER satisfy us! People are sinners just like we are and they will ALL fail us. But–God never fails and He never sins. He is perfect and He gives us everything we need and more than we ever imagined. WE are not the source of goodness and satisfaction and so WE should not try to be to others what only GOD is. Nor, should we place that unrealistic expectation upon anyone else! Rather, when we get close to God, He grows the deeply satisfying fruit of HIS Spirit within us. His fruit becomes our most prized possession. After all, money can’t buy “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, etc.,”–right? (Galatians 5:22) We can’t buy true happiness because it belongs to God. He’s not for sale. We don’t possess it unless we’re close to Him. We get close to God by pruning out everything which keeps us from bearing His fruit. Then–He enriches our soul. We relish the present. We don’t need to try to make other people happy; instead, we show them what it looks like. Jesus said, “I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5) All satisfaction begins with God!
