Because Jesus paid the ultimate price for us, God is personally vested in our life. When we sacrificially invest our time and resources into the life of another person to make their life better, it’s heart-breaking to see them intentionally choose to fail. If we care about them, we also hate to see them waste their talent and choose a harder, more miserable way to live. I have clients who spent years investing massive resources, time and love into children who weren’t theirs by birth, and those children threw it all away for a life of drugs, laziness and ultimately, lots of jail time. I can’t even begin to describe their pain. They made daily personal sacrifices for years and the only time the children contact them is when they need money. They knew the cost and risks of adopting a child but chose the risk of love. We can be a lot like those children towards our adopted Father. His Son, Jesus, knew the risk and sacrifice for us when He decided to give His life so that we might live. He knew we were weak sinners who would often choose to reject Him–yet, He chose love. The Bible says, “For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:6-8) After I accepted God’s gift of salvation and He adopted me into His family, I chose to go my own destructive way for many years. I would show up at His door only when I needed something and prayed He’d help me out of my latest sin-induced scrape. What an ungrateful child! He still loved me but I was missing the best part of His love–knowing Him. He is love. When I returned to Him and discovered the joy of living in His love, then all that He had invested in me began to multiply from my life through the power of His Spirit. It’s an extraordinary experience! I never again want live without His presence. His magnificent love has produced a grateful submission to His will. No investment is greater than love!
