Drawing our thoughts to God’s goodness is a sure way to get ourselves out of a depressing funk. Sometimes I wake up in the morning and begin to slip into sadness based upon something I don’t have, a goal I haven’t achieved, or someone who hurt me. These thoughts produce negative emotions in my soul, which, unless redirected–can ruin my day. God wants to make my day wonderful. He waits for me to turn to Him. He has planned goodness for me. His Word says: “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.” (James 1:17) ALL the best gifts come from God! When I begin to remember His goodness, it revives my soul and draws praise from my lips. He reminds me of His goodness: “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits, who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy, who satisfies you with good so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.” (Psalms 103:2-5) No other person does any of these marvelous things for us–right? As we discover His goodness, we find more and more reasons to praise Him and to keep His presence close. His presence gives us our greatest security. The Psalmist said, “I bless the Lord who gives me counsel; in the night also my heart instructs me. I have set the Lord always before me; because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken. Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices; my flesh also dwells secure.” (Psalms 16:7-9) When our security is in God, we live in consistent joy. He is the only One Who NEVER changes. We can ALWAYS depend upon Him. When we are close to Him, our life becomes secure. We are not shaken. He transforms us into someone stronger than we ever imagined. God is the best part of who we are and He gives us every reason to live today with great joy!
