God’s love is our model for loving each other. We can only love each other with His love, when we’ve experienced it for ourselves. Unless we are close to Him, it’s impossible for us to acknowledge the magnificent benefits of God’s love. Although we often experience the benefits of God’s love–like the beauty of creation and His provision for our basic needs–we don’t acknowledge those benefits as gifts of His love. Paul the Apostle was clearly close enough to God to articulate His experience of God’s deep love for him. He wrote: “For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans‬ ‭8:38-39)‬ Is this our experience with God’s love? If so, is this how we love each other? Jesus said: “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.” (John‬ ‭13:34‬) When we draw close to God, His love becomes our constant security and comfort. His love transforms our love. We experience His example of love to us and we emulate it. We know He doesn’t withhold His love in retaliation for our sin and such like nonsense which characterizes typical human love. Sure, when we choose to sin, we separate ourselves from the benefits of being close to His presence, but that doesn’t mean that He doesn’t still provide for our necessities. He is our Father. Although we constantly mistreat each other, choose our own way, neglect our relationship with Him, don’t seek His wisdom, and all the other offenses we commit against His love–He continually still provides for many of our basic needs. We are the only one who separates ourselves from His magnificent love. Furthermore, it’s only when our heart is far from Him that we mistreat others, because when we’re close to Him, His love drowns out hate. Closeness to God provides us all the love we’ll ever need and the best love we’ll ever give!
