I often live life the way I sometimes attack a set on the volleyball court—I rush my approach. Sure, I can hit the ball when I approach too fast; however, because I’m underneath the ball, my hit doesn’t have nearly as much power or control as it does when my timing is right. It’s also ugly! A perfectly timed spike is effective and beautiful–but never happens without a set.
God sets us up for amazing plays–but we need spend enough time with Him to recognize His call and trust the wisdom of His next move. Depending upon the play He calls, sometimes we need to move faster and sometimes we need to be patient. For a quick, short set to be maximally effective, it often requires that the attacker be jumping before the ball even leaves the setter’s hands. When we know God and are listening–sometimes He tells us to jump before we see the ball. That perfectly timed play is a beautiful and powerful testimony to Him! Other times, He sets us for the high-outside power hit. We see the ball arch through the air, we patiently time our approach, jump high, and slam the ball down. No matter what play God’s sets, when our response is well-timed, it maximizes our effectiveness for His glory!
Jesus said, “Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.” (John‬ ‭15:4-5‬) We can’t do anything FOR Him–WITHOUT Him; but–WITH Him–ALL things are possible! (Matthew 19:26) God’s works are perfect, beautiful and powerful. There is nothing we do on our own which compares to what God does. He does it everyday. He’s brilliant. When we live close to Him, we listen and obey Him. WE become part of every amazing play that He has planned for our life. There’s no sweeter victory than God’s!
