If we lived in the sub-zero weather of Antarctica and our home had a wood burning fireplace as our only source of heat–we’d never want that fire to go out! The warmth of that fire would draw us in from the cold outside. It would be vital to keep that fire burning–whatever the cost! When God becomes the passionate fire of our life, we recognize just how much we need Him in this world filled with cold, harsh evil. When we walk in any direction which is not led by the Spirit, a chill sets in. We throw icy water on our Spiritual fire. We often become so cold that we’re delusioned and we fall into a dangerous stupor. Without God’s fire, we cannot withstand the cold.

Anytime I choose to ignore God’s way, the temperature in my home begins to feel as cold as the outside world and–I become fearful. I remember the ravages of living in the cold, harsh world far from the fire of God’s Spirit. I don’t ever want to be there again. I love His fire. I cherish the warmth and passionate love of His Spirit. There is none like Him. As the Psalmist said: “Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” (Psalms 73:25-26) When we experience Him, we realize how vital He is to us.

For many years after I became God’s child, I chose to live in the coldness of the world. I can’t reverse the damaging choices I made. The frostbite of sin leaves scars. I doused my spiritual fire with the ice water of the world. I sadly chose to damage myself and others. I’m so grateful that God loved me back to His fireside. I was so cold. When I was shivering in the cold, He gave me a vision of the fire He could light inside me. I timidly cracked open the door of my heart, and as He kindled the fire, I immediately felt the warmth of His Spirit rush in. I never want it to go out! As I feed His fire with fuel of seeking Him, studying His Word and following His way–His fire burns inside me with a rich warmth that the cold world can never create. God’s fire is His. There is none like Him. He paid the ultimate price to give us–not only, eternal life–but also, the warmth of His fireside while we dwell on earth!
