So much of life turns out differently than we imagined; however, God has a magnificent plan. To find His plan, we must stay close to Him. Right after the birth of Jesus, Luke records: “But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart.” (Luke 2:19) I suspect that during these tender moments as her newborn Son lay in her arms, she had no idea that 33 years later He would hang dying on a cross to save her soul! God’s plan of glorious love had been set in motion. Her job was to love and nurture The Christ Child. She didn’t need to know the future to be part of God’s plan; in fact, it’s probably better she didn’t.

The closer we get to God, the more we realize how little we know about anything and thus, how important it is to listen to Him in order to live His amazing plan. It’s simply better to know Him than to try to know the future. We probably couldn’t handle the knowledge of the future anyway. Our richest knowledge is in Him. In Isaiah 9:6, Jesus is called “Wonderful Counselor.” Paul wrote that in Him “are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.” (Colossians 2:3) We study, work and strain to gain knowledge of science, law, math, love, child rearing, politics, etc., because we believe it will bring us success. Meanwhile, if we are God’s child, He has placed within us the capacity to know The Creator of all knowledge.

How much time do we spend with Him–studying Him, talking with Him? How will we ever know His plan if we’re too busy studying our own? Mary, Joseph, and the disciples likely thought Jesus was going to save them by conquering Caesar–NOT by dying on a cross! Like them, our mind is too limited to understand the depth of God’s plan; however, through listening and obeying we may be a part of it—just like them. God’s plan for their lives was much different and much better than they ever imagined. God’s plan for OUR life is too!
