Christmas is a time of profound loneliness for many people. If you’ve never had to live alone–without parents, a spouse, children or a significant other–then perhaps you’ve never experienced loneliness. Maybe the deepest part of your soul has never ached for the close companionship of another person. Loneliness is a very real emotion. Although the Bible tells us that if we want to have friends we must be friendly (Proverbs 18:24), even the strongest believer–who is alone–deals with loneliness. God knows. He understands. He created us.

After He created Adam, He created Eve because He said “it is not good for him to be alone.” (Genesis 2:18) Even in the perfection of Eden where Adam had an unbroken relationship with God–God KNEW Adam needed human companionship. God met that need for Adam. Adam didn’t have to go looking for it–God knew. When we are lonely, God knows. He knows it’s not an emotion which we can just magically wish away anymore than I can wish away my blue eyes. It’s part of who we are. It’s a gift that makes us human and draws us to our Creator. When we seek God, He fills us in ways we never imagined. We discover Who He is. His name, “Immanuel,” means “God with us.” The Bible says: “Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.” (Isaiah 7:14) Jesus was born to die so He could live WITHIN us!

God has a plan to provide for our companionship. When we’re feeling lonely, we can turn to Him. He has the answer. It doesn’t always come in the way we think it will–I suspect Adam never expected Eve to appear from his rib! God’s ways are always better than ours. We need not rush out into the world to drown out loneliness or experiment with the wrong relationship just to keep from being lonely. God loves us more than we love ourselves. He is our most Faithful Friend. He has a plan to take care of us–in His time and in His way! When we seek Him–we find His way is perfect!
