For many years I loved someone who didn’t love me in return. I thought that the years I spent loving this person was big waste of my time–until God showed me differently. You see, by loving someone who didn’t love me, I learned about God’s love for me. God loved me more than I ever loved anyone. He loved me when I failed to even acknowledge His existence. He loved me when I was ungrateful. He loved me when I was ashamed of Him. He loved me when I did things which brought shame to His name. He loved me when I blamed Him for my trouble. He loved me when I trampled His pure love under the dirty feet of my sin. Then, after twenty years of rejection, it was His goodness that brought me back to Him.

When I finally returned to Him, He didn’t reject me. He welcomed His prodigal child back into the home of His heart. Do I believe that all those years that He loved me were a waste of His love? Absolutely not! Without His unfailing love, I would never have found my way back to Him. Despite ALL the years of my abuse of His love, He continued to lovingly give me life and supply my basic needs. He gave me a million chances–and then one more. He loved me back to Himself. Now–I don’t know what I’d ever do without Him! His love changed me. It is still changing me. His love was not wasted.

The gift of our love towards another person is never wasted either. When we have God’s love, we don’t give love because we expect to receive. We don’t need anything because we already possess heaven. Even if the person never loves us back, by loving them, we are loving God because we are obeying His command to love others. Love is the gift we give that is never wasted! For each of us, it begins with receiving His merciful gift of Grace! “But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved.” (Ephesians‬ ‭2:4-5)
