Have you ever wondered why the story of the wise men is in the Bible? (Matthew 2:1-2) Perhaps, it is to remind us of how wise it is to passionately and purposefully seek God. God’s wisdom is high above man’s–when we seek it–it makes us part of miracles. The wise men who came to worship Jesus were likely people who had studied history, science and the Messianic prophecies recorded in the Old Testament. For example, they likely read the prophecies recorded by Balaam: “A star shall come out of Jacob and a scepter shall rise out of Israel” and by Micah: “But you, O Bethlehem…shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose coming forth is from of old, from ancient days.”(Numbers 24:17; Micah 5:2) To seek the promised Messiah, they left the comfort of their homes and the security of their jobs. The didn’t have an address for their final destination. Their navigation system was based upon a star which had miraculously appeared in the east. To have noticed the new star and understood its significance, to have found the right city, the right house and the child of an unknown family–they must have been diligently seeking God! That’s because God gives miraculous wisdom to those who seek Him. God’s wisdom does not typically make sense to us unless we know God.

In his farewell address to Israel, Moses said: “You will seek the Lord your God and you will find him, if you search after him with all your heart and with all your soul.” (Deuteronomy 4:29) Beautiful! The Creator of all wisdom wants to give us His wisdom. Will we passionately seek Him, or will we seek the lesser wisdom of the world? Will we risk our security in what we can see and what we know–for God’s glorious adventure in His wisdom? Our experience walking with God is only as deep as we want to wade in! The deeper we go, the more we experience something so wonderful that we never want to go back. “Wisdom” is realizing that NOTHING we find in the world can ever compare to EVERYTHING we find in Christ! The story of the wise men illustrates the great reward of passionately seeking our Heavenly Father who wants to give us His priceless gift of wisdom!
