When Mary chose God’s plan instead of her own, she was blessed to be a part of the miracle of Christ’s birth. When Gabriel appeared to her and told her she would be with child, she was already engaged to be married and planning for one of the happiest days of her life. (Luke 1:27) She had BIG plans, but God had BIGGER plans. His plans would require courageous faith because under the law, she could be put to death for losing her virginity before marriage! (Deuteronomy 22) Mary’s response was not to question how she would escape humiliation or death; rather, it was childlike faith: “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.”(Luke 1:38) What a fabulous example!

When I struggle with daily decisions–especially ones which involve strong desires or emotions like love, fear, or desperation–God reminds me that what HE’s planned for me is better than what I’ve planned!! To know His plan I must be close to Him. When my relationship with Him is deep enough, then I KNOW I am unconditionally loved by Him. That’s when I have childlike trust in Him because my heart is found in His care instead of battered by the harsh whims of emotion or the shifting sands of desire. As I reflect upon the dozens of decisions which lie before me today, only ONE matters above all others—to stay close to my loving and wise Father.

My plans and dreams are much smaller than His because mine are limited by what I see and know. I SEE only what is possible; God DOES what I believe is impossible. I’ve seen Him do it. It’s amazing! The angel told Mary: “For nothing will be impossible with God.”(Luke 1:37) As a virgin miraculously gave birth to our Savior, when we believe in God–above ALL we know or see–we also also become part of what is impossible. God’s plan for us is another one of His gifts to embrace and celebrate!
