The best relationships in life are with those who love God more than anyone else. I was discussing this with a friend and he asked: “If you are giving 100% of your heart to God, how will you have anything leftover for your husband?” I completely understood his misperceptions about loving God because I believed the same thing for most of my Christian life. I believed God wanted to take the best things in life from me. It’s not true for us or for those we love! Until we experience God’s love, we won’t understand that God is not competition for those we love; rather, He perfects our love for them. Loving God doesn’t require for us to divide our heart between Him and those we love because when we love Him–His love is multiplied in our heart. We receive more than we ever give–and we learn to give it away. God teaches us how to love because in Him–we know what perfect love is like. Like an adopted orphan experiencing unconditional and forever love for the first time—our lonely little heart begins to open up and overflow with more love than we knew existed!

To experience the love of God, we must come to Him willingly. By definition love is volitional–not forced. The deepest essence of love is rooted in willing and selfless submission to Jesus who set the standard for love. Jesus said “love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength” and “love your neighbor as yourself.” ‭(Mark‬ ‭12:30-31‬) When we love God with every fiber of our being, we forsake the sin He hates and we long to know more about Him. As we get closer to Him, we develop His character of selflessness. As we become selfless, we are encompassed by a love so rich that we never want to lose it. We want to share it; thus, we begin to love each other the way God loves us. His love within us enriches every other human relationship!
