The New Year is beginning today. Does it give you a sense of hope and anticipation? Although I’ve always enjoyed the refreshment of a New Year, knowing God more personally has made the newness even more exciting! When we fall deeply in love with God, we are swept away by His unfathomable love and incredible wisdom. We desire His guidance for all our decisions and learn to allow God to lead us–like a small child–in the power and peace of His purpose.

We discover the richness of a relationship with Him as written in the Book of Job: “I know that you can do all things, and that no purpose of yours can be thwarted. ‘Who is this that hides counsel without knowledge?’ Therefore I have uttered what I did not understand, things too wonderful for me, which I did not know. ‘Hear, and I will speak; I will question you, and you make it known to me.’ I had heard of you by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees you; therefore I despise myself, and repent in dust and ashes.” (‭Job‬ ‭42‬:‭2-6‬) Does this sound like your experience with God? Sadly, for too many years–it was not my experience. What changed?

I learned that God’s way was better than mine.

Job expressed it as “despising himself” because when he finally was able to see God for Who He is, he realized how foolish he had been to question God’s purpose for his life. Thus, he turned to God. It is truly despicable to cheat ourselves out of living in the will of God who constantly gives us what is “too wonderful” for us to comprehend. When I learned how wonderful He is, I found it incomprehensible to return to living without Him. I want to be close enough to Him to ask for His advice, hear His voice, and have the wisdom to live in His amazing plan. I’m loving myself the best when I love God enough to follow Him!
