Our culture is plagued by loneliness. Divorce, geographical separation of families, frenzied preoccupation with materialism, socializing on the internet, and 24/7 entertainment without having to leave our home–have all isolated us. God created us for relationships. C.S. Lewis said, “We are born helpless. As soon as we are fully conscious we discover loneliness. We need others physically, emotionally, intellectually; we need them if we are to know anything, even ourselves.” Our most meaningful relationship is with God. He gives us the most accurate sense of who we are–after all, He made us; created us to to have relationships with each other.

Our greatest friendships are with those whose greatest friend is God because in Him is the greatest love which is the basis for the greatest friendship. Loneliness isn’t cured by in friendship with someone who has something physical to offer us or in places where people are just looking for a good time. If we think our best friends are the ones who have money, nice things, a prestigious career, or who give us the best time–would we still enjoy their friendship if they didn’t have those things? What’s left when the worldly things are stripped away? Exactly. No one can take God away when He is our best Friend..

When He is our best Friend, we are a friend worth having.

When God is our center, we know who we are irrespective of what we have or who our friends are. God’s friendship wards off loneliness because we are constantly engaging with people as Jesus did while He lived on earth. In His life and His death, Jesus practiced what He preached about friendship: “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.” (John‬ ‭15:13‬) He showed us how to be a friend and He told us how to have His friendship! “You are my friends if you do what I command you.” (John‬ ‭15:14‬) Passionately pursuing God is the permanent cure for loneliness because in Him we find our best Friend and we become a best friend!
