The greatest enemy of our nation is not ISIS; rather, it’s the deception that we can maintain our freedom while living independent from God. To be secure as a nation, our greatest security must be in God. He has never needed bombs or bullets to defeat the enemy. It is in Him that we even exist: “In him we live and move and have our being.” (Acts‬ ‭17:28‬a) Thus, if we don’t exist without Him, neither can we hope to maintain freedom without Him. God gives life, stability, wisdom, character and strength.

Independent of Him, we live in the frail strength of our flesh.

Independence from God was the original sin. Eve believed she could live better without God so she chose to disobey Him. (Genesis 3:1-7) When we choose to live against God’s ways, we have chosen to live in opposition to Him. How can we expect to have the protection of His strength when we are living as His enemies? Can a parent protect a child who leaves home? However, when we are close to Him, we are empowered by The Creator who sustains everything! Is there any enemy that can defeat God who–set the earth on its foundations, made mountains rise, valleys sink to the place He appointed for them, made springs gush forth in the valleys, caused grass to grow, the moon to mark the seasons and the sun to know when to set? (Psalms 104) God’s power is independent of inanimate objects like bombs, bullets or money and He freely gives it to us when we are close to Him.

To be close to Him, we must search to know Him. We must know His ways and obey them. Then, the power of heaven pours into our life. The Spirit of wisdom speaks through our lips. He can use the obedient heart of even just one person to preserve freedom for an entire nation. Do we believe in the power of God, who through the obedience of Moses, destroyed the mighty Egyptian army? When are close to Him, He becomes our strength and shield!
