Is a bad attitude worth the sacrifice? I saw this quote posted on Facebook: “Don’t confuse my personality with my attitude. My personality is who I am. My attitude depends upon who you are.” When I read it, it was a wake-up call for me! I had lived like this–trapped into believing others could ruin my day and make me have a bad attitude.

The truth is–my attitude does NOT depend on someone else!

There is no doubt, that when I’m around some people, the struggle is real. I get an icy edge, become belligerent, testy, sad, sour, critical, nasty, etc. Do you know anyone who has any of these affects on you? It’s easy to develop the same ugly attitude as someone who’s chosen to live ugly. However, that’s OUR choice–and by doing so–we LOSE God’s presence.

The Bible says: “Do not repay evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary, bless, for to this you were called, that you may obtain a blessing.

For ‘Whoever desires to love life and see good days, let him keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit; let him turn away from evil and do good; let him seek peace and pursue it. For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are open to their prayer. But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.’” (1 Peter 3:9-12) The fact is–no one causes my bad attitude because sin is always my choice.

When I choose a bad attitude, I rob myself of God and am only hurting myself.

However, when I stay close to God, it’s amazing to see His responses! He always has an answer for ugliness! When we’ve seen what He can do and we know ahead of time that we’ll be around a difficult person, we ask God to prepare our heart. Even in the times we fail and have to apologize for an ungodly reaction–He uses it to work miracles. When we know the joy of God’s presence, the small satisfaction we gain from a bad attitude isn’t worth the sacrifice of His love, wisdom, strength and peace!
