When people ask how I came to know God so well that we have two way communication–my answer is very simple: I WANTED to know Him. Even after I was born again, I didn’t seek to know Him like a friend. I had to realize how GOOD He was before He became my most passionate reason for living!

The Bible has a simple formula for knowing God: 1. Love Him; and, 2. Seek Him. The Book of Proverbs says: “I love those who love me, and those who seek me diligently find me.” (Proverbs‬ ‭8:17)‬ ‭http://bible.com/59/pro.8.17.esv. What does it mean to love God? Jesus said: “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” (John‬ ‭14:15) Obeying God draws us near to Him because He is righteous; conversely, our sin takes us far from Him. Whatever flavor of sin we choose–worry, fear, love of money, pride, selfishness, unkindness, gossip, neglecting church, ugly thoughts–if we’re engaged in it–we’re not close to God! The second part of the equation is to seek Him.

Knowing God is very intimate and personal–like a marriage. A preacher, priest, mother or father can’t do it for us. Seeking God involves only us and Him–it’s intensely personal–just like when we accepted His gift of salvation. It’s a relationship–which requires work. It’s by far the most rewarding investment of time we ever make. It may mean we sacrifice sleep, a morning workout, the newspaper or breakfast–but if we want to know Him, we need to begin every day with Him. When He’s most important to us–we discipline ourselves to seek Him. In our morning time with Him, we do things like–confess our sins, talk with Him about what’s important to us, ask Him what’s on the top of His to-do list for us, ask Him to teach us the answers to our problems, read His Word, etc. When our heart is wide-open to Him, His presence fills us. We know Him and we know what He wants–just like we know what a close friend wants without them ever saying a word! When we seek to know God, He finds us where we are and He teaches, loves and guides us like a father does his children.
