We live in a country of incredible prosperity, yet many still choose to live in slavery–much like the Israelites did in the promised land. After Nehemiah led the miraculous rebuilding of the wall of Jerusalem, the people recognized that their national vulnerability was related to their disobedience to God. Their rejection of God had made them slaves in their own promised land. They said: “Behold, we are slaves this day; in the land that you gave to our fathers to enjoy its fruit and its good gifts, behold, we are slaves. And its rich yield goes to the kings whom you have set over us because of our sins. They rule over our bodies and over our livestock as they please, and we are in great distress.” (Nehemiah 9:36-37)

Like the Israelites, we live in a land of great prosperity, yet our freedom is becoming vulnerable. Within our nation we see sharp political divisions, corrupt leadership, faltering government and rampant crimes against the innocent. We live in fear. More than ever we depend on government, instead of God, to supply our needs and protect us. We must go back to our roots–to what our founding fathers knew–that it is our Creator who endows us with liberty! We must not be consumed with prosperity and cast aside the Lord who created prosperity. If we wish to preserve our freedom, we must humble ourselves and return to the Author of freedom. Freedom begins with individuals. To preserve freedom–we must live free. God makes us free! “For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.” (Galatians‬ ‭5:1‬) http://bible.com/59/gal.5.1.esv.

God gave us the BEST of Who He IS and He offers himself to us. God is not a slave and–when we allow Him to become the best part of who we are–we aren’t either. When we surrender to Him, we are never shackled by fear or desire. He is greater than fear and more satisfying than any earthly desire. When He is Lord of our life, we never live like slaves in the promised land!
