The Bible says, perfect love casts out fear. (1 John 4:8) Once, when I made a list of people I was afraid of, God showed me that not one person on the list was a person who feared God. They were fearsome to me because of their evil–not their goodness! Wow! Am I a child of God that I should EVER fear those whose father is not God? When we’re afraid of bullies and tyrants, we unnecessarily imprison ourselves.
So, how do we change our most basic instincts and learn to NOT be afraid?
We must know and respect God! HE isn’t afraid of evil. Jesus said: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” (Matthew 10:28) It’s easy to forget God’s power when the bad guy is standing in front of you cussing, bullying and terrorizing—right? However, the more time we spend with God, the more real He is to us. God IS love and He “casts out fear.” God’s guards our imperishable gift of salvation and we can pity—not fear–those who do NOT have His precious gift!
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.” (1 Peter 1:4-6) “Living hope” will never be overpowered by “dead fear.”
God doesn’t live in a prison of fear and we don’t belong there either! When we spend quality time with Him, He gives us courage for the day. The Bible says, “power belongs to God.” (Psalms 62:11) When I’m with my Father, I hear Him say: “Fear not, my beloved daughter, power belongs to Me. Come now, walk with me and face the tyrants with courage–for they can never touch your soul!”
