When we love and respect God, we develop a close, grown-up relationship with Him. If our children become adults without learning to love and respect us—what kind of relationship will we have? How close would I feel to my adult son if he trashed the house or rarely talked to me? God gives us His Word so we can learn His ways and build a relationship with Him. It’s the best relationship we’ll ever have.

The book of Job says: “Can you find out the deep things of God? Can you find out the limit of the Almighty? It is higher than heaven—what can you do? Deeper than Sheol—what can you know? Its measure is longer than the earth and broader than the sea. If you prepare your heart, you will stretch out your hands toward him. If iniquity is in your hand, put it far away, and let not injustice dwell in your tents. Surely then you will lift up your face without blemish; you will be secure and will not fear. You will forget your misery; you will remember it as waters that have passed away. And your life will be brighter than the noonday; its darkness will be like the morning. And you will feel secure, because there is hope; you will look around and take your rest in security. You will lie down, and none will make you afraid; many will court your favor.” (Job 11:7-9, 13-19)

Amazing! What immense security we find by knowing God!

When we seek Him, growth is a natural progression. If we want to go beyond spiritual childhood, we must make growth a priority. For years I did the “church routine” without daily searching for the “deep things of God.” I was consumed by the shallow things of the world. Physically, I was a scurrying, hurrying adult—but spiritually, I was a toddler in diapers still attached to my pacifier! Growing in my relationship with God opened the door to adult-sized adventures. Baby food and toys were no longer satisfying! When we draw close to Him, He leads us away from the sins and habits that keep us from growing. God gives us “a life brighter than the noonday.
