Children of God are freed from engaging in retaliation against those who unjustly mistreat us. We have a choice about whether to allow ourselves be tainted by mistreatment and dragged into the nonsense. When we ask God to help us forgive and remove our focus from the pain of the past transgressions against us, the results are miraculous.

I’ve experienced the miracle of God freeing me from retaliation. Not that I don’t still struggle–I certainly do! It became much easier when God taught me an important truth: People who are ugly to me when I’ve done nothing to legitimately anger them have a bigger problem than their problem with me–their problem is with God. This is so true–AND–it frees us from angry retaliation. Their problem is between them and God. Furthermore, if we respond to their ugliness without God’s guidance then–we have a problem–with God. When we live close to God’s presence, we never want to miss even one moment with Him. The peace of His presence produces true forgiveness within us because we know His presence isn’t worth forfeiting for our ugliness.

Even those who hate us are created in the image of God. We are ALL equally unworthy of God’s love. His Son died for EACH of us—no exceptions! The Bible says: “God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans‬ ‭5:8‬) http://bible.com/59/rom.5.8.esv Christ didn’t die for good people—He died for those who were responsible for His death! This includes us. His choice to wash the feet of His betrayer, Judas Iscariot, provides a clear picture of the way we should love. He loves us while we are sinners! Our worst enemy is created in God’s image and we are just as unworthy of God’s love as they. This is truth. This truth frees us to love as God does and–His presence makes it worth it!
